RABSON-MENDENHALL SYNDROME

Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome is a rare disease characterized by severe insulin resistance. This disease often causes mutations in the receptor gene for insulin.

Furthermore, for patients who suffer from this syndrome, the body’s resistance to insulin impairs the regulation of blood sugar. Because of this, diabetes milletus, a condition wherein the blood sugar levels become dangerously above normal levels. This is why Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome can be a fatal condition.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms and signs will appear in your first year of life. Not only that, but this also often affects your development and growth.

Moreover, the following are some of the signs and symptoms:

  • Nails. They get thicker and thicker.
  • Teeth. They get larger than the normal size and they get crowded.
  • Skin. The skin often becomes dry, and it has the potential to thicken and darken or develop to acanthosis nigricans.
  • Head and face. Individuals with this syndrome may have a larger-than-normal gap between the eyes, bigger jaw, ears, and lips, rough skin, and tongue with deep grooves.

Other signs and symptoms to look out for include:

  • Weakening of the muscles
  • Swelling in the belly
  • Having a lot more hair than usual
  • Very little fat under the skin
  • Slow growth and development, even before birth
  • Enlargement of organs, including the heart, penis, kidney, and clitoris

DIAGNOSIS

You will be having a physical exam with your doctor and he will ask you about your signs and your medical history. They may also check the child’s blood sugar and insulin levels by conducting a blood test.

TREATMENT

Because of its various symptom, this treatment requires a team of dentists, doctors, and surgeons. Also, you and your family may want to seek counseling as you fight through this disease.

Furthermore, this illness still has no cure. Nevertheless, the following treatments below may be able to control the symptoms:

  • Biguanides. Use this kind of medication to lower your sugar level.
  • Leptin. This protein is produced by the body and can control your blood sugar and insulin levels.
  • Recombinant insulin. This kind of protein will treat ketoacidosis, a condition caused by insulin resistance.
