Protect Yourself Against Flu This Holiday Season

In the Philippines, the Christmas season begins as soon as the “ber” months arrive. It is that time of year when Filipino families get together, eat and drink, and have a good time. Unfortunately, the holidays overlap with flu season in the country, which typically runs from June to November.

The flu is caused by the influenza virus, which is transmitted via droplets from an infected person through coughing, talking and sneezing. You may also be infected through contact with the surfaces, material and clothing contaminated with discharges of an infected person.

The good news is you can take steps to protect yourself against the flu this holiday season.

Get your flu shot. The flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from getting sick with the flu this holiday season. The Department of Health (DOH) recommends getting the flu vaccine each year, preferably anytime from February to June.

Practice good health habits. Get adequate sleep, exercise regularly, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Wear a mask. If you are not fully vaccinated or if you have a weakened immune system, wear a mask indoors.

Wash your hands often. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to prevent the spread of germs.

Find safer ways to celebrate the holidays. There are several ways to enjoy holiday traditions and protect yourself and loved ones not only from the flu but COVID-19 as well.

  • Organize family gatherings outside.
  • Limit gatherings to no more than 3 households, and no more than 2 hours.
  • Do not participate in multiple gatherings with many different households.

Consult your doctor for more information on flu prevention and vaccination.
