PROPOXYPENE

Propoxyphene is an opioid (narcotic) pain medication that blocks pain signals to the brain.

This medication is used to relieve mild to moderate pain. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not use this drug:

  • Along with sedatives or alcohol.
  • If you have a history of suicidal thoughts or actions.
  • If you have history of substance abuse or dependence.
  • Without prescription and more than prescribed.

Common side effects may include:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Sedation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Spasm of the Ureter, which can Lead to Difficulty in Urinating

 

Serious side effects may include:

  • Depress Breathing
  • Mental or Mood Changes
  • Blurred Vision

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your medical condition or history, especially of:
    • Asthma, COPD, Sleep Apnea, or other Breathing Disorders
    • Liver or Kidney Disease
    • A History of Head Injury or Brain Tumor
    • Mental Illness
    • A History of Drug or Alcohol Addiction

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Alcohol
  • Barbiturates
  • Skeletal Muscle Relaxants (eg. Carisoprodol (Soma) And Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril),
  • Benzodiazepine Sedatives( Eg. Diazepam (Valium) and Lorazepam (Ativan)
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol Xr, Equetro, Carbatrol)
  • Antidiarrheals, for Example, Diphenoxylate (Lomotil) and Loperamide (Imodium)
  • Drugs which Both Stimulate and Block Opioid Receptors, for Example Pentazocine (Talwin), Nalbuphine (Nubain), Butorphanol (Stadol) and Buprenorphine (Buprenex)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Extreme Drowsiness
  • Pinpoint or Dilated Pupils
  • Confusion
  • Cold and Clammy Skin
  • Blue Lips
  • Weak Pulse
  • Slow or Uneven Heart Rate
  • Shallow Breathing
