PREDNISONE

This medication is a corticosteroid that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Prednisone also suppresses the immune system.

This drug is used to treat conditions such as arthritis, blood disorders, breathing problems, severe allergies, skin diseases, cancer, eye problems, and immune system disorders.

Do not take Prednisone if you have a fungal infection anywhere in your body.

Steroid medication can weaken your immune system. Hence, you may get infection easily. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Do not receive a “live” vaccine while using Prednisone.

Call your doctor at once if you have shortness of breath, severe pain in your upper stomach, bloody or tarry stools, severe depression, changes in personality or behavior, vision problems, or eye pain.

You should not stop using Prednisone suddenly. Follow your doctor’s instructions about tapering your dose.

Side effects include:

  • Retention Of Sodium (Salt) And Fluid,
  • Weight Gain,
  • High Blood Pressure,
  • Loss Of Potassium,
  • Headache, And
  • Muscle Weakness.

Other symptoms include:

  • Puffiness Of The Face (Moon Face),
  • Growth Of Facial Hair,
  • Thinning And Easy Bruising Of The Skin,
  • Impaired Wound Healing,
  • Glaucoma,
  • Cataracts,
  • Ulcers In The Stomach And Duodenum,
  • Worsening Of Diabetes,
  • Irregular Menses,
  • Rounding Of The Upper Back (“Buffalo Hump”),
  • Obesity,
  • Retardation Of Growth In Children,
  • Convulsions, And
  • Psychiatric Disturbances (Such as depression, euphoria, insomnia, mood swings, personality changes, and even psychotic behaviour)

Precautions

Before taking Prednisone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

  • Current/Past Infections (Such As Fungal Infections, Tuberculosis, Herpes)
  • Heart Problems (Such As Heart Failure, Recent Heart Attack)
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Thyroid Problems
  • Kidney Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Stomach/Intestinal Problems (Such As Ulcer, Diverticulitis), Bone Loss (Osteoporosis)
  • Mental/Mood Disorders (Such As Psychosis, Anxiety, Depression)
  • Eye Diseases (Such As Cataracts, Glaucoma)
  • Diabetes
  • Mineral Imbalance (Such As Low Level Of Potassium/Calcium In The Blood)
  • Seizures
  • Blood Clots
  • Bleeding Problems

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may interfere with how your medication works. Tell your doctor about all your medications and any you start or stop using during treatment with Prednisone.

Some products that may interact with this drug include:

  • Aldesleukin
  • Mifepristone
  • Drugs That Can Cause Bleeding Or Bruising (Including Antiplatelet Drugs Such As Clopidogrel, “Blood Thinners” Such As Dabigatran/Warfarin, Nsaids Such As Aspirin/Celecoxib/Ibuprofen).

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
