PREDNISOLONE ACETATE

Prednisolone acetate is a steroid drug that is used to block various inflammations triggered by chemical or immunological causative agents. It effectively inhibits fibrin deposition, edema, capillary dilation, scar formation and phagocytic migration deposition of collagen.

Prednisolone acetate is used in the following conditions:

  • Different inflammatory and allergic ocular conditions
  • Allergic, catarrhal or vernal conjunctivitis
  • Inflammatory keratitis
  • Iritis and other inflammatory disorders of the anterior segment of the globe

Do not give Prednisolone acetate to people with the following conditions:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Fungal disease
  • Sensitivity to any component of the formulation

Prednisolone Acetate may have the following side effects:

  • Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) with possible development of glaucoma and infrequent optic nerve damage
  • Posterior sub capsular cataract formation
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Systemic hypercorticoidism
  • Acute anterior uveitis
  • Perforation of the globe
  • Keratitis
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Mydriasis
  • Conjunctival hyperaemia
  • Loss of accommodation
  • Ptosis
  • Ocular infection (bacterial, fungal and viral)

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Cirrhosis
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Convulsive disorders
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Elderly
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hypertension
  • Psychological disturbances
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Adrenal suppression
  • Infections

 

Interactions

 Prednisolone Acetate may interact with the following medicines:

  • Amphotericin
  • Oral hypoglycemic agents
  • Insulin
  • Diuretics
  • Potassium supplements
  • Digoxin
  • Live virus vaccines
