The plantar reflex develops in the fetus in the womb of the mother and is completely present during childbirth. It is generally developed at four months up to six months of age.
The plantar reflex is similar to the palmar reflex in such as way that stroking or pushing down on the balls of the feet can make the foot and toes flex, or twist, to grasp on whatever has caused the stimulus.
The Plantar reflex identifies with the development and coordination of the muscles of the feet and can lead to balance and gross motor functioning.
Once the child stands and strolls, it is basic that the foot has built up a suitable extensor reaction to pressure on the balls of the foot to give satisfactory push-off while walking.
