PIOGLITAZONE-ALOGLIPTIN

Alogliptin belongs to a class of drugs called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, and Pioglitazone belongs to a class of drugs called thiazolidinediones. Both medications work on certain hormones and cells in your body to help lower your blood sugar levels.

This drug is used in addition to diet and exercise to help lower and control blood sugar levels in people who have type 2 diabetes. It can used and may be taken with other diabetes medications.

Pioglitazone can cause or worsen a heart condition known as congestive heart failure. In this condition, your heart doesn’t pump blood well enough. It can also the risk may if you already have heart or kidney problems. Your doctor will monitor you for symptoms of heart failure such as unusually fast weight gain, trouble breathing, or swelling. If heart failure develops, your doctor may lower your dose or stop this medication.

Side effects may occur with Pioglitazone-Alogliptin. The most common are: stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, back pain, and cold-like symptoms (upper respiratory tract infection).

Precautions

Before taking alogliptin/pioglitazone, tell your doctor promptly if you have the following medical condition:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing; or hoarseness) caused by another DPP-4 inhibitor (eg, saxagliptin)
  • if you have a history of liver or kidney problems, abnormal liver function tests, heart problems (eg, congestive heart failure [CHF]), inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), stones in your gallbladder (gallstones), bladder cancer, or eye or vision problems (eg, macular edema)
  • if you have a history of bone fracture, low calcium intake, or weak bones (eg, osteoporosis)
  • if you have swelling problems (edema)
  • if you have a history of alcohol abuse

 

Interactions

Pioglitazone-Alogliptin can interact with other medications, herbs, or vitamins you might be taking. It is important to notify your doctor if you’re taking any or planning to take other drug. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you want to know more about these interactions.
