PHYSICAL URTICARIA

Physical urticaria is a disorder in which heat, cold, or contact with chemicals or plants cause red, itchy skin sores, and pruritus. For the medical term, these are referred to as wheals. Moreover, the lesion’s center can be white or red, and such a flare frequently encircles it with red skin. Usually, children are the most affected by this condition

SYMPTOMS

Physical urticaria can form anywhere on the body, although it’s more likely to show up on the arms. The following are some of the most common signs and symptoms of the condition:

  • Tingling or itching at the beginning of the rash
  • Itching or burning in parts afflicted by the rash
  • Raised, red bumps on the area of smaller weals
  • Swelling of the affected area

Physical urticaria is usually not dangerous, and the rash will go away on its own within an hour of appearing.

DIAGNOSIS

The most common methods used to diagnose physical urticaria are the patient history and physical examination. A test may be used to confirm the diagnosis if there is indeed a history of reactivity to physical triggers. The test is conducted by applying the suspected agent to the skin, such as ice or light, in the hopes of eliciting a response.

In some situations, your doctor may order tests in order to learn more about your disease. The tests may include:

Passive warming test. This will elevate your body temperature by using warm water or a warmer environment. When you’re exposed to more heat, your doctor may watch how your body reacts.

Skin challenge test: This test may include a component— methacholine. It will create a reaction in your body and the doctor will determine it.

TREATMENT

Working together, your doctor will create a treatment plan that is customized for your unique situation and requirements.

Simple dietary changes may be all you need if your symptoms are minor. If you’re athletic or do a lot of physical or demanding activity in your everyday life, however, lifestyle changes can be difficult to stick to. For some people, medication may be a preferable alternative.
