PHYSICAL ABUSE-Watsons Health

PHYSICAL ABUSE

Physical abuse is a condition when a person causes you harm while using physical force. It is also a form of physical maltreatment that causes you to experience trauma.

TYPES

Physical abuse can be identified through the following violent acts:

  • Choking or strangling
  • Kicking
  • Other acts that hurt or threaten you
  • Physically restraining you (such as pinning you against a wall, floor, bed, etc.)
  • Pushing or shoving
  • Scratching or biting
  • Slapping
  • Using weapons or objects that could hurt you

SYMPTOMS

Give immediate response to a child showing these symptoms:

  • Unexplained injuries, such as burns, bruises or fractures
  • Injuries that don’t match the given explanations

DIAGNOSIS

Physical and behavioral signs and symptoms must be checked properly to have careful diagnosis and evaluation because it is difficult to identify the cause of abuse and neglect.

Below are the factors to be considered in determining child abuse:

  • Children’s developmental and medical history
  • Description or observation of the child’s behavior
  • Discussion with parents or caregivers
  • Early identification of child abuse that can keep children safe by stopping abuse and preventing future abuse from occurring
  • Lab tests, X-rays or other tests
  • Observing interactions between parents or caregivers and the child
  • Physical exam, including the evaluation of injuries or signs and symptoms of suspected abuse or maltreatment
  • Talking, when possible, with the child

TREATMENT

Treatment can help both children and parents avoid later maltreatment or abuse.

It is our first priority to ensure the safety of children from trauma of abuse. The treatment will focus on preventing future maltreatment and physical abuse to reduce psychological and physical problems.

As required, we should help children with proper medical care if you notice some symptoms of physical abuse. Medical attention is needed to avoid future health complications and dangers. Follow-up checkups are also required as advised by your physician.

Psychotherapy is also needed to lessen trauma to children who experience physical abuse.

Talking with a mental health professional can:

  • Help a child who has been maltreated on learning how to trust other people again
  • Teach a child about normal behavior and relationships
  • Teach a child about conflict management and how to boost self-esteem
