PHENYLEPHRINE-DM-GUAIFENESIN

Phenylepherine is a decongestant that relieves nasal congestion by shrinking the blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dextromethorphan (DM) is a cough suppressant that reduces the urge to cough by affecting certain part of the brain. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps loosen congestion in the chest and throat. It works by making it easier to cough out through your mouth.

This combination medication is used to relieve symptoms like cough, airway irritation and nose congestion caused by colds, flu, or hay fever. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not use this drug if:

  • You are allergic to any ingredient in this medication or if you have other allergies.
  • You have taken Furazolidone or a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) like Phenelzine within the last 14 days
  • You have severe high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, or other severe heart problems (eg, heart blood vessel disease)

Common side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Excitability
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Nausea
  • Stomach Upset
  • Trouble Sleeping

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Severe side effects may include:

  • Severe Allergic Reactions (Rash, Hives, Itching,  Difficulty Breathing,  Tightness In The Chest, Swelling of the Mouth, Face, Lips, or Tongue)
  • Difficulty Urinating
  • Fast, Slow, or Irregular Heartbeat
  • Fever
  • Hallucinations
  • Mental or Mood Changes (eg, Anxiety, Nervousness)
  • Paleness
  • Seizures
  • Severe or Persistent Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness or Headache
  • Tremor

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Precautions

Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • If you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • If you have a history of:
    • Glaucoma
    • Enlarged Prostate Gland or other Prostate Problems
    • Heart Problems
    • Diabetes
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Blood Vessel Problems
    • Adrenal Gland Problems
    • Mental or Mood Problems (eg, Depression)
    • An Overactive Thyroid
    • Seizures
    • Stroke
  • If you have certain medical condition like:
    • Chronic Cough
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Other Lung Problems (eg, Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema)
    • Cough Produces Large Amounts of Mucus
  • If you are in poor health or are obese.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Digoxin Or Droxidopa
  • Beta-Blockers (eg, Propranolol)
  • Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) Inhibitors (eg, Tolcapone)
  • Furazolidone
  • Indomethacin
  • Maois (eg, Phenelzine)
  • Tricyclic Antidepressants (eg, Amitriptyline)
  • Bromocriptine
  • Guanadrel
  • Guanethidine
  • Mecamylamine
  • Methyldopa
  • Reserpine

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty Urinating
  • Fast or Shallow Breathing
  • Hallucinations
  • Paleness
  • Restlessness
  • Seizures
  • Severe Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness or Headache
  • Severe Drowsiness
  • Unusually Fast, Slow, or Irregular Heartbeat
  • Vomiting
