PHENOXYMETHYLPENICILLIN K

Phenoxymethylpenicillin represses the final cross-linking stage of peptidoglycan creation through the binding and inactivation of transpeptidases on the inward surface of the bacterial cell layer, therefore hindering bacterial cell wall synthesis. It might be less active against some microorganisms, especially gram-negative microbes. It is used in the treatment of mild to moderate infections.

Phenoxymethylpenicillin K is used in the following:

  • Susceptible infections
  • Prophylaxis of recurrent rheumatic fever
  • Streptococcal infections of the upper respiratorytract, including scarlet fever and erysipelas
  • Pneumococcal infections of the respiratorytract, including otitis media
  • Fusospirochetosis (Vincent’s infection) of the oropharynx
  • Staphylococcal infections of the skin and soft tissue

Do not give Phenoxymethylpenicillin K to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to to phenoxymethylpenicillin and other penicillins
  • Concomitant use withnadolol and propranolol.

Phenoxymethylpenicillin K may have the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore mouth
  • Black hairy tongue
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Neutropenia
  • Leucopenia
  • Eosinophilia
  • Haemolytic anaemia
  • Coagulation disorders
  • Hepatitis
  • Cholestatic jaundice
  • Allergic reactions
  • Serum sickness-like reactions
  • Convulsions
  • Paraesthesia
  • Neuropathy
  • Interstitial nephritis
  • Nephropathy
  • Urticaria
  • Rash
  • Pruritus
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Pseudomembranous colitis

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patient with history of asthma
  • Seizure disorders
  • History of beta-lactam allergy
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Pregnancy and lactation

 

Interactions

Phenoxymethylpenicillin K may interact with the following medicines:

  • Neomycin
  • Anticoagulants
  • Chloramphenicol
  • Erythromycin
  • Tetracyclines
  • Methotrexate
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Probenecid
  • Sulfinpyrazone
  • Oral typhoid vaccine
  • Nadolol
  • Propranolol

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Motor seizures
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Seek medical help immediately.
