PANCREAS DIVISUM

PANCREAS DIVISUM

Pancreas divisum is a widely recognized inconsistency in the pancreas that occurs from birth. Usually, the life of a human embryo begins in the pancreas, particularly in the dorsal and ventral tubes. The tubes are combined during the development period but, if the other tube fails to combine with the other, pancreas divisum will occur.

SYMPTOMS

Some patients have no obvious indications of having this condition; however, it is mostly recognized during autopsy.

Meanwhile, some of the patients may experience symptoms while developing the condition. The symptoms include the following:

TREATMENT

If the symptoms are not visible or experienced, treatment is not needed. Meanwhile, for patients who have symptoms and indications of the condition, medications might be quite crucial.

Moreover, some doctors may suggest:

  • Puestow procedure or sphincterotomy. This is a procedure wherein minor papilla is removed to enable the normal process of the digestive juices. In this procedure, a tool called a stent is inserted so that it won’t create a clot. Also, since every surgery contains a risk, you are free to ask your doctor what to expect in the Puestow procedure.
  • Pancreas divisum diet. Adjusting your diet can help prevent and lower the risk of developing the symptoms. Your diet may include:

Fasting. Controlling your food intake can help the swollen pancreas. The fasting can last in a short period and begin with a small amount, depending on the amount you can tolerate. You can also ask for a dietary plan. Usually, the doctors may suggest soft foods as part of the fasting, or you can include the following in your diet:

  • Energy drinks
  • Apple and white grape juice
  • Chicken or beef broth
  • Water
  • Gelatin

Lessening consumption of fatty foods. The fatty foods needed by the body depends on the weight and height of an individual. However, the usual fat intake should not exceed 30%. There are foods that can give low fat such as turkey, boneless, fish, and chicken breast.

Avoiding alcoholic beverages. Beverages with alcohol content can be one of the factors that affect your pancreas. Doctors often advise patients to quit drinking alcoholic drinks and drink water instead of keeping their bodies hydrated.
