OXYCODONE HCL + NALOXONE HCL

Oxycodone HCl + Naloxone HCl is a combination drug for pain relief. It binds to kappa, mu, and delta opiate receptors that are located in the brain, spinal cord and other organs such as those in the digestive system. Oxycodone is a drug that is known as an opioid receptor agonist that acts on these receptors, bringing about relief from pain by binding to the endogenous opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. On the other hand, naloxone is a true antagonist that acts on all opioid receptors. The two drugs have synergistic effects.

Oxycodone HCl + Naloxone HCl is used in the following:

  • Severe chronic pain that is unresponsive to non-narcotic analgesia
  • Very severe idiopathic restless legs syndrome

Do not give Oxycodone HCl + Naloxone HCl to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to oxycodone or naloxone
  • Severe chronic obstructive lung disease
  • Severe bronchial asthma
  • Severe respiratory depression with hypoxia and or hypercapnia
  • Non-opioid induced paralysis

Oxycodone HCl + Naloxone HCl may have the following side effects:

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Severely impaired pulmonary function
  • Renal impairment
  • Mild hepatic impairment
  • Opioid-induced paralytic ileus
  • Myxedema
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Addison’s disease
  • Prostate hypertrophy
  • Toxic psychosis
  • Alcoholism
  • Delirium tremens
  • Pancreatitis
  • Hypotension
  • Head injury (due to the risk of increased intracranial pressure)
  • Patients taking MAO inhibitors
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

 

Interactions

Oxycodone HCl + Naloxone HCl may interact with the following medicines:

  • Anticholinergics
  • Macrolide antibiotics
  • Azole-antifungal agents
  • Protease inhibitors
  • Rifampin
  • Carbamazepine
  • Phenytoin
  • John’s Wort
  • Paroxetine
  • Quinidine

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

Respiratory depression

  • Somnolence progressing to stupor or coma
  • Hypotonia
  • Miosis
  • Bradycardia
  • Hypotension and death

Seek medical help immediately.
