OXCARBAZEPINE

Oxcarbazepine belongs to a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

This medication is used in treating certain types of seizures in patients with epilepsy. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Do not use Oxcarbazepine if you are allergic to any ingredient in Oxcarbazepine.

Common side effects of this drug include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Tiredness
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Stomach/Abdominal Pain
  • Headache
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Constipation

Tell your doctor promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen.

Precautions

Before using Oxcarbazepine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • If you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • If you are allergic to carbamazepine
  • If you have kidney or liver problems or low blood sodium levels
  • If you have a history of mental or mood problems (eg, depression), or suicidal thoughts or actions
  • If you have been tested and know whether or not you have a gene type called HLA-B*1502

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may interfere with how your medication works. Tell your doctor about all your medications and any you start or stop using during treatment with Oxcarbazepine.

The following medicines may interact with Oxcarbazepine:

  • Cobicistat
  • Elvitegravir
  • Certain drugs used to treat chronic hepatitis c (such as simeprevir, sofosbuvir)
  • Rilpivirine

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
