Ovarian epithelial cancer is the most prevalent type of ovarian cancer. As iit is named after the cells that make up the surface of the ovaries, it begins on the epithelium, also known as surface cells. However, through time, the cancer can progress and can spread to other organs (metastasize).
Any woman can have the risk of acquiring ovarian cancer. Up to this point, doctors still don’t know the specific reason as to what causes it. However, there are risk factors associated with ovarian cancer, such as:
- Being above 50 years of age
- History of Lynch syndrome in your family
- Mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene
- You are a smoker
- You are obese
- You got your first period before you were 12 years old or stopped after you were 52.
- You have had a history of breast cancer
- You have never been pregnant
- You underwent estrogen replacement therapy
- Your family has a medical history of having cancer
