OVARIAN EPITHELIAL CANCER

Ovarian epithelial cancer is the most prevalent type of ovarian cancer. As iit is named after the cells that make up the surface of the ovaries, it begins on the epithelium, also known as surface cells. However, through time, the cancer can progress and can spread to other organs (metastasize).

Any woman can have the risk of acquiring ovarian cancer. Up to this point, doctors still don’t know the specific reason as to what causes it. However, there are risk factors associated with ovarian cancer, such as:

  • Being above 50 years of age
  • History of Lynch syndrome in your family
  • Mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene
  • You are a smoker
  • You are obese
  • You got your first period before you were 12 years old or stopped after you were 52.
  • You have had a history of breast cancer
  • You have never been pregnant
  • You underwent estrogen replacement therapy
  • Your family has a medical history of having cancer

SYMPTOMS

Ovarian cancer is oftentimes asymptomatic that is, it doesn’t have any symptoms. However, if you experience symptoms, you might:

  • Have a bloated feeling
  • Have abdominal pain
  • Have trouble eating
  • Feel full
  • Need to urinate frequently

These are usual problems, and they don’t indicate whether you have ovarian cancer or not. There are a lot of diagnoses to be ruled out. If you experience any of those symptoms for more than several weeks, it is best to consult your doctor. If it turns out to be ovarian cancer, seeking immediate treatment would be best.

DIAGNOSIS

No single definitive test exists yet in screening ovarian cancer. Your doctor will try to perform a pelvic examination and feel your ovaries. If something doesn’t turn outright, you may be requested to do these diagnostics:

 

  • Ultrasound
  • Blood test
  • X-rays
  • Biopsy

 

TREATMENT

Treatment options for ovarian cancer are multifaceted, that is, it involves a lot of treatment options. Therefore, having a definitive diagnosis with regards to your cancer is key to obtaining the right treatment option for you. The following are the treatment options that would be employed if you have ovarian cancer:

 

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Palliative care
