ORAL GALVANISM

Oral galvanism or amalgam illness is a term for oral or systemic symptoms to either poisonous effects of amalgam fillings or electric flows between metals in dental restoration methods and electrolytes in saliva.

TYPES

There are four types of galvanism:

  • Dental galvanism is that of a silver amalgam set opposite to or nearby a tooth restored with gold
  • Between teeth in a similar curve yet not in contact with each other
  • Mandibular and maxillary teeth occlusion where there is pain and discomfort when two metals come in contact with one another
  • When two adjacent teeth are restored with different metals

SYMPTOMS

The following are the symptoms of oral galvanism:

  • Headache
  • Burning sensation
  • Clenching of the teeth and pressing of the tongue

DIAGNOSIS

While your dentist can diagnose oral galvanism he or she cannot recommend that the patient will have to remove all the metals from the oral cavity.

The doctor will first get a medical history and will do a physical then dental exam.

TREATMENT

Home remedies or treatments for oral galvanism may include the following:

  • Chewing gum, or biting sugarless gum
  • Sucking on a bit of ice for temporary relief
  • Using baking soda when brushing your teeth
  • Substituting your commercial toothpaste with toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
