OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTIONS

Opportunistic infection is a serious infection that can happen in people with a weak immune system, such as those with HIV. This rarely happens nowadays even in HIV infections, as advanced treatment is able to lessen the amount of HIV in a person’s body and keeps their immune system stable. Despite it, a lot of people with HIV still have opportunistic infections.

Thus it is essential for people with HIV to be familiar with opportunistic infections so that they can prevent those possibilities of being infected.

SYMPTOMS

Opportunistic infections are more uncommon nowadays compared to the early days of HIV because of advanced treatment. People may not know that they have HIV for years after they were infected. These people can get this because they are not taking antiretroviral treatments (ART) as early as possible. People with HIV should take medications to avoid this infection.

DIAGNOSIS

The most important thing to do to avoid opportunistic infections is to stay healthy and undergo some lab tests. This can help your doctor know when you may be a danger for it and work with you to prevent them. You can avoid this infection by taking some medications.

TREATMENT

There are medications available to take if you have opportunistic infections such as antibiotics or antifungal medicines. This may be very severe and medications may be costly. To avoid this infection, healthy, taking ARTs for HIV every day, and keep your viral load at a minimum so that your immune system can stay strong.
