NONMELANOMA SKIN CANCER

Non-melanoma skin cancer refer to all kinds of cancers that occur in the skin that are not melanoma.

A few types of skin cancers fall within the more extensive class of non-melanoma skin cancers, the most widely recognized of which are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

TYPES

Non-melanoma skin cancer may have the following types:

  • Angiosarcoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Cutaneous B-cell lymphoma
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
  • Merkel cell carcinoma
  • Sebaceous carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin

SYMPTOMS

In the beginning of non-melanoma skin cancer, you may not see any signs or symptoms. In later stages, the signs and symptoms will include:

  • A sore that doesn’t heal
  • Rough or textured red patches with irregular borders
  • Raised protuberances that indent in the middle
  • A growth that resembles a mole
  • A sore that is dried up or drains effortlessly
  • A growth or region that is bothersome

DIAGNOSIS

There are now better approaches to diagnose non-melanoma skin cancer and follow-ups after treatment. Coming up next are examinations through new imaging procedures that may enable specialists to analyze, plan treat and screen reactions to treatments for non-melanoma skin cancers.

Your doctor will conduct the following tests for further diagnosis:

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Reflectance con-focalmicroscopy (RCM)

 

TREATMENT

Non melanoma skin cancer treatment relies upon the type of disease. Skin cancer treatment  includes surgery to remove the diseased cells.

Specialists are searching for better approaches to enhance treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer. Here are some treatments for this condition:

  • Laser treatment
  • Laser-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT)
  • Brachy therapy
  • Electronic brachy therapy
  • Directed treatment and immunotherapy
