NITROFURANTOIN MACROCRYSTALS

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals is used to treat or prevent urinary tract infections. This drug is an antibiotic that functions by halting the growth of microscopic organisms. It won’t work for viral infections+ such as the common cold and flu.

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals is used in the following:

Treatment of UTI when due to susceptible strains of E. coli, enterococci, Staph aureus and certain susceptible strains of Klebsiella and  Enterobacter spp.

Do not give nitrofurantoin macrocrystals to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to nitro furantoin and other nitro furans
  • Patients with oliguria, anuria or significant impairment of renal function
  • G6PD deficiency
  • Simultaneous administration of MAOIs
  • Perinephric abscesses or pyelonephritis
  • History of cholestaticor hepatic dysfunction
  • Pregnancy (during labor and delivery)
  • Lactation
  • Pre-term infants

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals may have the following side effects:

  • Chronic, subacute or acute pulmonary reactions
  • Nausea
  • Emesis
  • Anorexia
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Transient alopecia
  • Lupus-like syndrome
  • Angioedema
  • G6PD deficiency anemia
  • Megaloblastic anemia
  • Eosinophilia

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Interstitial pneumonitis and fibrosis
  • Hepatitis

Interactions

Nitrofurantoin macrocrystals may interact with the following medicines:

  • Magnesium trisilicate
  • Probenecid
  • Sulfinpyrazone
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
  • Urinary alkanizing agents
  • Alkaline phosphatase

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Numbness in your hands and feet
  • Pain in your hands and feet
  • Weakness

Seek medical help immediately.
