Night sweats are repeated episodes of marked perspiration that may wet your nightclothes or beddings and are related to a certain disease.

You may wake up at night for sweating excessively, particularly if your room is warm. However, these are different from night sweats and is normal.

Generally speaking, night sweats are also associated with fever, weight loss, pain, cough, gastrointestinal problems, or various diseases.

There are different reasons behind night sweats. To find the reason, the doctor must get a thorough medical history and do some tests to know what illness is responsible for the night sweats. Some common conditions that can cause night sweats are:

  • Menopause
  • Idiopathic hyperhidrosis
  • Infections
  • Cancers
  • Medications
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Hormone disorders

If you experience night sweats as a result of menopause, your doctor may recommend hormone treatment. This treatment may help reduce hot flashes and other signs. Your doctor may also prescribe some solutions, like gabapentin, clonidine, or venlafaxine.

If alcohol usage, caffeine use, or illegal prescription use are causing your night sweats, your doctor may urge you to limit or keep away from these substances. Oftentimes, they may give tranquilizers or recommend treatments to enable you to stop.

Some reasons behind night sweats can be avoided. To cut down your risk of experiencing night sweats:

  • Limit your use of alcohol and caffeine
  • Abstain from using tobacco and illegal drugs
  • Keep your room at a cooler temperatureat night
  • Try not to exercise, eat hot foods, or consume warm refreshments during nighttime
