NIFUROXAZIDE

Nifuroxazide is an antibiotic that is also known as a nitrofuran, and is taken by the mouth as a capsule or a suspension. It was patented in 1966 and is used to treat colitis and loose bowel movement. A 2016 study has shown that Nifuroxazide is more effective than probiotics in treating adult diarrhea.

Nifuroxazide is used in the following:

  • Colitis
  • Diarrhea

Do not use Nifuroxazide in patients with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to nitrofuran derivatives

Nifuroxazide may have the following side effects:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Children
  • No improvement after 3 days
  • Invasive infections
  • Dehydration

Interactions

Nifuroxazide may interact with the following medicines:

  • Statins
  • Digoxin
  • Oral anticoagulants
  • Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Paracetamol
  • Bile acids

Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

  • Hemolytic anemia
  • Liver damage
  • Neurological disorders
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Renal disorders
