NEPAFENAC

Nepafenac is used to treat macular edema and postoperative ocular inflammation. It is an analgesic and NSAID prodrug which passes through the cornea after ocular application.

Nepafenac is converted to amfenac by ocular hydrolases, that reduces the formation of prostaglandins by blocking cyclooxygenase or prostaglandin H synthase enzyme.

Nepafenac is used in treating the following:

  • Postoperative ocular inflammation
  • Macular oedema

Do not give this drug to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to nepafenac or other NSAIDs

Nepafenac may have the following side effects:

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Complicated ocular surgeries
  • Corneal denervation
  • Corneal epithelial defects
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Ocular surface disease (example dry eye syndrome)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Repeat ocular surgeries within a short period of time
  • Predisposition to bleeding
  • Pregnancy and lactation

 

Interactions

Nepafenac may interact with the following medicines:

Eye corticosteroid
