NICORANDIL

Nicorandil enlarges arterioles and large heart arteries by opening the potassium channels, and activating guanylate cyclase, causing venous vasodilatation. It thus decreases preload and afterload, and enhances blood flow within the heart.

Nicorandil is used for  the following conditions:

Do not give Nicorandil to the following:

  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Hypotension
  • Left ventricular failure with low filling pressure
  • Lactation

Nicorandil may have the following side effects:

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Hypovolemia
  • Low systolic blood pressure
  • Acute pulmonary oedema
  • Pregnancy
  • May impair ability to drive or operate machinery

 

Interactions

Nicorandil may interact with the following medicines and substances:

  • Alcohol
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Antihypertensives
  • Sildenafil and other phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Dizziness
  • Tachycardia
  • Hypotension
