Natalizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody drug that specifically attaches to the alpha-4 integrin molecules. It averts the movement of white blood cells into the brain and the gut, thus decreasing the recurrence of relapse, inflammation, and demyelination.
Natalizumab is used to treat a positive type of multiple sclerosis. It is not a cure for MS, however, it can help in preventing your immune system from attacking cells in the brain and spinal cord. It helps lessen attacks and may prevent or delay disability. This medication is usually given as a solution and is injected slowly through the vein over one hour.
Before you start using the medication, tell your doctor about your allergies and the medicines that you are currently taking. Also, discuss with your doctor about your medical histories such as if you have a weak immune system, recent infections, mental disorders or mood swings.
