Description: Naratriptan is a selective serotonin agonist which produces vasoconstriction of cranial arteries.

Onset: 30 min.

Pharmacokinetics:

Absorption: Bioavailability: 63% in men and 74% in women. Peak plasma concentrations after 2-3 hr (oral).

Distribution: Protein-binding: Approx 29%. Distributed into milk in rats.

Metabolism: Undergoes some hepatic metabolism by various cytochrome P450 isoenzymes.

Excretion: Primarily via urine (50% as unchanged drug, 30% as inactive metabolites). Elimination half-life: 6 hr; markedly prolonged in renal or hepatic impairment.

    • Migraine treatment
      • Helps to relieve headaches, pain and other symptoms of migraines, including sensitivity to light/sound, nausea, and vomiting.
      • does not prevent future migraines or reduce how often you may get a headache

 

  • Belongs to a group of drugs called triptans

 

How to use naratriptan

  • Always refer to your doctors instructions before taking this medication. Duration and dosage will be determined by your medical condition and its response to the medication. Make sure to take this mediciation in the prescribed amount and time period even after symptoms disappear. Discontinuing the medication before completion of treatment may cause incomplete treatment of condition. If Symptoms persist, consult your doctor

 

Taken by mouth; With or without food;  usually at the first sign of migraine;

    • Minor side effects (if these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor)
      • Flushing, sensations of tingling/numbness/prickling/heat, weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness

     

    • Serious side effects (inform your doctor immediately)
      • blue fingers/toes/nails, cold sensation of hands/feet, hearing changes, mental/mood changes, fast/irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe stomach/abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, signs of a stroke (such as weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, sudden vision changes, confusion
      • rarely cause a very serious condition called serotonin syndrome/toxicity
        • fast heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, severe dizziness, severe nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, twitching muscles, unexplained fever, unusual agitation/restlessness

     

    May increase your blood pressure. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.

    • Precautions:
      • Inform your doctor
        • Allergy to the medication or to other triptan migraine drugs or any allergies
        • Medical History of heart disease (e.g., chest pain, heart attack, irregular heartbeat), decreased blood flow in the brain (e.g., stroke, transient ischemic attack), blood circulation disease (e.g., ischemic bowel disease, Raynaud’s disease), certain types of headaches (hemiplegic or basilar migraine), kidney disease, liver disease
        • Also inform your physician if you have the following risk factors for heart disease: diabetes, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight, smoker, female after menopause, male over age 40

       

      • May cause dizziness or drowsiness

       

      • Should only be used when there is a clear need during pregnancy as it may harm an unborn baby. If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.

       

       

      • It is not known if this drug passes into breast milk. Before breast-feeding, consult your physician.

       

      Interactions:

       

      Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

       

      • Products that may interact with this medication include:
        • Drugs that increase serotonin increases risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity
          • street drugs such as MDMA/”ecstasy,”St. John’s wort, certain antidepressants (including SSRIs such as fluoxetine/paroxetine, SNRIs such as duloxetine/venlafaxine)
        • Any ergotamine medication (e.g., dihydroergotamine or methysergide) or any other “triptan” drugs (e.g., zolmitriptan, rizatriptan)
    • Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.
