NAPHAZOLINE + PHENIRAMINE

Naphazoline, an imidazoline derivative is a sympathomimetic with α-adrenergic activity. It produces vasoconstriction. When applied topically to mucous membranes, it reduces swelling and congestion. It is often used in combination with pheniramine, an alkylamine derivative antihistamine, in ophthalmic preparations.

Naphazoline + Pheniramine is used in the treatment of ocular or eye allergy.

Avoid using Naphazoline + Pheniramine in angle closure glaucoma.

A patient with diabetes or hypertension needs to be warned about few drug interactions.

Certain medications should be avoided in pregnant or breastfeeding women. A few drugs should be avoided by patient with hepatitis or cardiac diseases.

Naphazoline + Pheniramine may have the following side effects:

  • Blurring of vision
  • Mild stinging and/or irritation
  • Mydriasis
  • Increased or decreased intraocular pressure
  • Liberation of pigment granules from the iris

A side effect of a drug does not only vary from drug to drug, but it also depends on the dose of the drug you use. Do not forget to share with your healthcare practitioner if you feel any side effect that troubles you.

Precautions

Naphazoline + Pheniramine should be used with caution in patients with the following conditions:

  • Glaucoma
  • Hypertension
  • Cardiovascular abnormalities
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Infection
  • Injury
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Avoid in infants and young children <6 yr. Rebound congestion may occur with prolonged use or overuse.

Patient should seek medical advice if there is ocular pain, vision changes, worsening of redness or irritation of the eye or symptoms lasts >72 hr. Remove contact lens before use.

 

Interactions

Naphazoline + Pheniramine may interact with the following medicines:

  • Maprotiline
  • TCA
  • MAOI
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco

If you think you may have used naphazoline + pheniramine more than the usual recommended dose, seek medical help immediately.
