Description: Nalidixic acid is a 4-quinolone antibacterial which works by killing sensitive bacteria in the urinary tract by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.

How to use nalidixic acid:

Always refer to your doctors instructions before taking this medication. Duration and dosage will be determined by your medical condition and its response to the medication. Make sure to take this medication in the prescribed amount and time period even after symptoms disappear. Discontinuing the medication before completion of treatment may cause incomplete treatment of condition. If Symptoms persist, consult your doctor

Taken by mouth; With or without food; usually once a day with a full glass of water (8 oz or 240 ml) or as directed by your physician;

Do not take products containing magnesium (eg, quinapril, didanosine, vitamins), aluminum, calcium, sucralfate, iron, or zinc preparations within 2 to 3 hours of taking nalidixic acid as this might affect absorption

Side Effects

Minor side effects (if these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor)
- Diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; feeling of a whirling motion; headache; nausea; rash; stomach pain or discomfort; vomiting.

Serious side effects (inform your doctor immediately)
- blurred or decreased vision; burning or tingling sensation; changes in color vision; convulsions; decrease in ability to sense pain, temperature, or body position; double vision; itching; numbness; pain; pain, redness, or swelling of a tendon; seeing halos around lights; weakness.

Severe allergic reactions are rare. Get immediate medical help if you notice the following:
- Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing

- Allergy to the medication or any allergies
- Medical History of Alzheimer disease, a central nervous system disease, hardening of the arteries in your brain, increased pressure in your brain, liver problems, sensitivity to the sun, severe kidney problems, a family history of heartbeat problems, blood disease porphyria a history of convulsions or you are undergoing cancer chemotherapy with the medicine melphalan or related medicines, you are taking an antiarrhythmic for abnormal heartbeat (eg, quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, or have the blood disease porphyria
  - a current pregnancy or planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

May cause dizziness or drowsiness. Limit alcohol intake

If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.
It is uknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Before breast-feeding, consult your physician.

Interactions

Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

Products that may interact with this medication include:
- aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, probenecid, chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin, tetracycline, ciclosporin, warfarin.
- Fatal haemorrhagic enterocolitis may occur when used with high-dose melphalan in children.

Overdose & Brands

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and as soon as you remember, take a regular dose or if the time of the next dose is near, wait for it before taking another dose and resume your usual schedule. Do not increase the dose to compensate for the missed dose.
