Description: Nadolol is a non-cardioselective β-blocker for high blood pressure treatment and prevention of chest pain

Duration: 17-24 hr.

Pharmacokinetics:

Absorption: Incompletely absorbed from the GI tract. Time to peak plasma concentration: Approx 3 or 4 hr.

Distribution: Widely distributed and enters breast milk. Volume of distribution: Approx 2 L/kg. Plasma protein binding: Approx 30%.

Metabolism: Not metabolised.

Excretion: Via urine (as unchanged drug). Plasma half-life: Approx 12-24 hr.

  • Used for
    • High blood pressure treatment
      • Aids in the prevention of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems
    • Prevention of chest pain
      • Reduces the frequency of episodes of chest pain and improves exercise ability
    • It is a beta blockers which works by lowering heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

 

  • May also be used to protect the heart after a heart attack, treat irregular heartbeat (e.g., atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter), and migraine headache prevention

 

How to use nadolol

Always refer to your doctors instructions before taking this medication. Duration and dosage will be determined by your medical condition and its response to the medication. Make sure to take this mediciation in the prescribed amount and time period even after symptoms disappear. Discontinuing the medication before completion of treatment may cause incomplete treatment of condition. If Symptoms persist, consult your doctor

  • Do not stop taking this drug without consulting your physician.
    • Minor side effects (if these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor)
      • Dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, and cough

     

    • Serious side effects (inform your doctor immediately)
      • bluish color of the fingers/toes/nails, hair loss (reversible), mental/mood changes (e.g., depression, confusion, memory problems), numbness/tingling, decreased sexual ability, swelling of the ankles/feet, severe tiredness, vision changes, wheezing, unexplained/sudden weight gain, worsening chest pain, tightness/pressure in the chest, chest pain spreading to the jaw/neck/arm, sweating, trouble breathing, or fast/irregular heartbeat, slow/irregular/fast heartbeat, severe dizziness/fainting.

     

     

    • May reduce blood flow to your hands and feet, causing them to feel cold. This effect may be worsend by smoking so avoid tobacco use and dress warmly

     

     

     

    • Serious side effects (inform your doctor immediately)
      • slow/irregular/fast heartbeat, severe dizziness/fainting.

     

    • Severe allergic reactions are rare. Get immediate medical help if you notice the following:
      • Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing
    • Precautions:
      • Inform your doctor
        • Allergy to the medication or to other beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, propranolol) or any allergies
        • Medical History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis), breathing problems (e.g., COPD, emphysema), blood circulation problems (e.g., Raynaud’s disease), low blood flow to the heart/brain (coronary artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack), diabetes, heart problems (e.g., heart failure, heart attack, valve problems), kidney disease, mental/mood disorders (e.g., depression), muscle problems (e.g., myasthenia gravis), certain skin conditions (atopy, psoriasis), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), certain types of tumor (pheochromocytoma).

       

      • May cause dizziness or drowsiness

       

      • May cause elevated blood sugar levels, which can cause or worsen diabetes.

       

      • Should be used when there is a clear need during pregnancy as it may harm an unborn baby. If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.

       

      • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding as this medication passes into breast milk and may cause unwanted effects on your baby

       

      Interactions:

      Taking multiple drugs may affect how medications work and/or cause unwanted side effects. List down all the medications you are taking and inform your physician and pharmacist. Do not take, discontinue, or alter any dose of medications without prior approval of your physician.

       

      • Products that may interact with this medication include:
        • Alpha blockers (e.g., prazosin), other beta blockers (e.g., atenolol), theophylline, calcium channel blockers (e.g., diltiazem, verapamil), clonidine, epinephrine, fenoldopam, fingolimod, methyldopa, nasal decongestants (e.g., phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine), neuromuscular blocking agents (e.g., tubocurarine), reserpine, “water pills” (e.g., diuretics such as furosemide)
        • Drugs that cause drowsiness such as
          • certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), medicine for sleep or anxiety (e.g., alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., chlorpromazine, risperidone, amitriptyline, trazodone).
        • Should not be used with arbutamine as a serious interaction may occur

       

      Double check the labels on all medications you are currently taking especially cough-and-cold products since they may contain drowsiness-causing components

    • Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

       

      Notes

       

      Lifestyle changes such as stress reduction programs, exercise, and dietary changes may increase the effectiveness of this medicine

       

      Missed Dose

      If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and As soon as you remember, take a regular dose or if the time of the next dose is near, wait for it before taking another dose and resume your usual schedule. Do not increase the dose to compensate for the missed dose.
