MORTON’S NEUROMA

Morton’s neuroma is a noncancerous or benign development of nerve tissue that grows in the foot. It normally grows in the middle of the third and fourth toes and is a common, tender, and painful condition.

People with Morton’s neuroma might feel that they are standing on a stone. This is due to the stiffening of the tissue all over one nerve, leading to the toes. Thus, it can cause burning, sharp pain in the padded portion of your foot. Also, your toes might feel numb or sting.

High-heeled sandals have been associated with the growth of Morton’s neuroma. Many individuals experience comfort by changing to normal shoes or sandals with wide toe caps. However, occasionally, corticosteroids or surgery might be needed.

SYMPTOMS

Normally, there are no apparent symptoms of Morton’s neuroma, such as a lump. Rather, you might experience these symptoms:

  • Numbness or tingling in your toes
  • A burning feeling in your toes and the ball of your foot
  • A feeling that you’re standing on a stone in your shoe.

If you feel any of the symptoms mentioned, don’t disregard them. Seek immediate medical care to diagnose and treat your condition properly.

DIAGNOSIS

To diagnose Morton’s neuroma, your doctor may ask about your symptoms and perform a physical exam. During the examination, your doctor will hold down or press your foot to see if there’s a mass of painful spots.

If your doctor thinks you have Morton’s neuroma, he/she will request imaging tests for a definite diagnosis, such as:

  • Ultrasound
  • MRI
  • X-rays

TREATMENT

The treatment for Morton’s neuroma varies depending on the seriousness of your condition. Your doctor may suggest that you try conservative methods first, such as therapy. And if conservative approaches fail to work, your doctor may suggest the following:

  • Decompression surgery
  • Injections
  • Removal of the nerve

Your doctor may also recommend the following lifestyle and home care habits to help relieve discomfort and pain:

  • Ice massage
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Changing your footwear
  • Taking a break by reducing activities like dancing, jogging, or biking, which may affect your condition
