MORPHINE

Morphine is an opioid (narcotic) pain medication that blocks pain signals to the brain.

This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It may also use as a preparation before a surgery operation. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not use this drug:

  • Without prescription or more than the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
  • If you have severe asthma or breathing problems, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, or a bowel obstruction called paralytic ileus.
  • If you have a history of substance dependence or abuse.
  • Along with alcohol.
  • To pregnant women.

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Sweating

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Serious side effects may include:

  • Mental or Mood Changes (such as Agitation, Confusion, Hallucinations)
  • Severe Stomach or Abdominal Pain
  • Difficulty Urinating
  • Signs of your Adrenal Glands not Working Well (such as Loss of Appetite, Unusual Tiredness, Weight Loss)
  • Fainting
  • Seizure
  • Slow or Shallow Breathing
  • Severe Drowsiness
  • Difficulty Waking Up

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • To children without the advice of doctor.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Your medical condition or history, especially of lung, liver or heart problems.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Opioid Agonist such as Pentazocine, Nalbuphine, Butorphanol
  • Opioid Antagonists such as Naltrexone

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Slow Breathing and Heart Rate
  • Severe Drowsiness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Cold and Clammy Skin
  • Pinpoint Pupils
