Minoxidil is used to stimulate hair growth as treatment of male pattern baldness. It is not used for baldness at the front of the scalp or receding hairline in men. Minoxidil is likewise used to help in the hair growth of women with thinning hair.
Minoxidil belongs to a class of medication referred to as vasodilators. It isn’t known how minoxidil makes hair grow. This medication isn’t used for patchy hair loss, unexplained hair loss, or hair loss after giving birth.
Do not use this product if you are 18 years old or younger.
Burning, stinging, or redness on the application site may also occur. If any of those consequences persist or worsen, contact your physician or pharmacist right away.
If your health practitioner has instructed you to apply this medicine, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risks. Many people who have used this medication did not experience any side effects.
Rarely, this medicine may be absorbed via the skin and bring about side effects. Stop using this medicinal drug and inform your doctor immediately when you have any severe symptoms, such as: unwanted facial/body hair, dizziness, fast/abnormal heartbeat, fainting, chest pain, swelling of arms/toes, unusual weight gain, tiredness, and problems in breathing.
A severe allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get help right away in case you have symptoms of severe allergy such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
Precautions
Before the use of minoxidil, tell your physician or pharmacist in case you are allergic to it; or if you have other allergic reactions.
If you have any of these health problems, consult your health practitioner or pharmacist before the use of this product: illnesses of the scalp (e.g., eczema, infection, cuts), heart problems (e.g., chest pain, heart attack, heart failure), kidney disorder, liver illness.
While being pregnant, use this product only when needed. Discuss the risks and advantages along with your physician.
It is not known whether or not this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Interactions
Drug interactions may additionally change how your medicines work or increase your chance for serious side effects. Some products which could have interactions with this drug include: drugs for high blood pressure (e.g., guanethidine), and drugs that have interaction with alcohol (e.g., disulfiram, metronidazole).
This medication can be dangerous if swallowed. If a person has overdosed and has signs such as problems in breathing, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, and flushing, get emergency medical help.
