METHYL SALICYLATE

Methyl salicylate is an organic ester which is naturally produced by many species of crops, such as wintergreens. It is usually synthetically produced, used as a perfume, in meals and beverages, and in liniments.

This product is used to treat minor aches and pains of the muscle groups/joints (e.g., arthritis, backache, sprains). Menthol and methyl salicylate are referred to as counterirritants.

Do not use if you have previous hypersensitivity to methyl salicylate. Watch out for signs and symptoms of methyl salicylate hypersensitivity such as:

  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Red
  • Swollen
  • Peeling or blistered skin with or without fever
  • Wheezing – tightness in the throat or chest
  • Trouble breathing or talking
  • Unusual hoarseness
  • Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat

Side effects of methyl salicylate may include:

  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Stinging
  • Burning on the application site
  • Blistering/swelling/severe redness at the application site
  • Increased/unusual pain at the application site
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Ringing in the ears

Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing

Precautions

There may be small amounts of the drug absorbed systemically, which can bring about a risk of Reye’s syndrome. This is often associated with the use of oral salicylates.

Take extra precaution when giving methyl salicylate ointments to a child under 12. Prolonged use or use on extensive skin areas may lead to systemic toxicity, e.g. hemostatic or metabolic changes.

For external use only. In conditions arising from more serious underlying causes, consult a doctor.

 

Interactions

Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you use “blood thinners” (e.g., warfarin).

This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing seek medical treatment immediately.
