METHOXY POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL-EPOETIN

Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta is a drug that is a continuous erythropoietin receptor activator that leads to erythropoiesis or increased red blood cell production by binding with erythropoietin receptors on progenitor cells in the bone. It has properties like epoetins however has a longer span of activity in increasing red blood cell production.

Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin is used for patients with anemia or chronic renal failure.

Do not give methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin to people with a history of serious allergic reactions.

Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin may have the following side effects:

  • Pure red cell aplasia
  • Exacerbation of hypertension
  • Hypertensive encephalopathy
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Hypo-tension
  • Peripheral edema

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patients with history of heart disease or stroke
  • Patients for surgery
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
