Methenamine is an organic compound which exerts urinary antiseptic and anti-infective properties. It has no antibacterial properties in an alkaline environment, however, in a more acidic environment, it is hydrolyzed to formaldehyde, which is a highly nonspecific bactericidal agent, that is active against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria.
