METFORMIN + GLIBENCLAMIDE

Metformin + Glibenclamide  contains the drugs metformin and glibenclamide. Glibenclamide is a sulfonylurea antidiabetic drug. It enhances the release of insulin from the beta cells in the pancreas that is not yet explained.

Metformin is an oral biguanide antidiabetic drug. Its effects include decreased uptake of glucose from the gastrointestinal tract and increased glucose use in the body tissues by enhancing insulin sensitivity. It hinders hepatic and renal gluconeogenesis.

Uses

Metformin + glibenclamide is used in the following:

  • Type 2 DM when diet and exercise and initial treatment with a sulfonylurea or metformin fails

Warning

Do not give Metformin + glibenclamide to people with the following conditions:

  • Patients with burns
  • Diabetic coma
  • Severe infection
  • Severe trauma
  • Hypotension or hypoxemia
  • Infection or gangrene
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Side Effects

Metformin + glibenclamide may have the following side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal effects
  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspepsia
  • Flatulence
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Prolonged hypoglycaemia
  • Cross-sensitivity
  • Transient visual disturbances

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Liver disease
  • Children
  • Elderly

Interactions

Metformin + glibenclamide may interact with the following medicines:

  • Allopurinol
  • Fluconazole
  • Chloramphenicol
  • Cimetidine
  • Clofibrate
  • Epinephrine
  • Phenytoin
  • Thiazide diuretics
  • Increased activity withMAOIs
  • Oral anticoagulants

Overdose & Brands

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Severe nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Epigastric pain
  • Thirstiness
  • Lost appetite
  • Hypotension
  • Acute renal failure
  • Coma
  • Cardiac arrest
