MENINGOCOCCAL POLYSACCHARIDE DIPHTHERIA TOXOID CONJUGATE VACCINE

Meningococcal polysaccharide diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccine is a sterile vaccine, administered intramuscularly. It has W-135 capsular polysaccharide antigens and Neisseria meningitides serogroup A, C, Y that are separately combined to diphtheria toxoid protein.

It is prescribed to patients who are between 9 months to 55 years old to protect against meningococcal disease-causing pathogens of Neisseria meningitides strains (A, C, Y and W-135).

This drug should be administered only with your physician’s prescription. It promotes adequate antibody production and fights against disease-causing agents.

Meningococcal polysaccharide diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccine is used in active vaccination to avoid invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitides serogroups A, C, Y and W-135.

Do not give Meningococcal polysaccharide diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccine to people with the following conditions:

Meningococcal polysaccharide diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccine may have the following side effects:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions like anaphylaxis or anaphylactic reaction
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Upper airway swelling
  • Urticaria
  • Erythema or skin redness
  • Pruritus or skin itching
  • Hypotension
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Paresthesia or numbness
  • Vasovagal syncope
  • Dizziness
  • Convulsions
  • Facial palsy
  • Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis
  • Transverse myelitis
  • Myalgia

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Meningitis caused by other microbes or to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by N. meningitides serogroup B
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome
  • Thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorders
  • Changes in immunocompetence
  • Children
  • Elderly
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding

Interactions

Meningococcal polysaccharide diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccine may interact with the following:

  • Blood thinners such as warfarin
  • Corticosteroids
  • Drugs used to treat psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, or other autoimmune disorders including etanercept, azathioprine, leflunomide, and others
  • Drugs to treat or prevent organ transplant rejection, such as basiliximab, cyclosporine, muromonab-CD3, mycophenolate mofetil, sirolimus, or tacrolimus
