MECILLINAM

Bivalirudin

Mecillinam is a drug that is known as a semisynthetic penicillin that affects bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is  effective against gram-negative organisms such as E. coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Salmonella and Shigella spp. It is also active against Proteus spp.

Mecillinam is used to treat infections that is due to susceptible gram-negative bacteria, such as urinary tract infections that are caused by Escherichia

 Mecillinam should not be given to people with the following conditions:

Mecillinam may have the following side effects:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema
  • Serum sickness-like reaction
  • Haemolytic anemia
  • Antibiotic-associated colitis
  • Anaphylaxis

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Kidney impairment
  • Avoid contact as skin sensitisation may occur
  • Liver problems
  • Suprainfection with penicillin-resistant organisms may occur with prolonged use
  • Avoid intrathecal route

Interactions

Mecillinam may interact with the following medicines:

  • Probenecid
  • Bacteriostatic drugs such as chloramphenicol and tetracyclines
  • Anticoagulants
