MASTECTOMY

A mastectomy is a medical procedure that removes all breast tissue from a breast as an approach to treat or stop breast cancer.

For those with beginning breast cancer, a mastectomy can be one treatment alternative.

Deciding on a mastectomy and lumpectomy can be difficult. The two procedures are similarly viable for preventing  breast cancer In any case, a lumpectomy isn’t a possibility for everybody with breast cancer, and others may prefer a mastectomy.

A surgical procedure to reestablish shape to your breast is called breast reconstruction.

Basic or total mastectomy focuses on the breast tissue itself. Here are the types of mastectomy:

Modified radical mastectomy involves the removal of both breast tissue and lymph nodes

Radical mastectomy  is a broad type of mastectomy

Partial mastectomy  is halfway mastectomy that removes the risky piece of the breast tissue and some ordinary tissue around it

Nipple-sparing mastectomy is a type of mastectomy wherein the breast tissue is removed, however the areola or nipple is preserved.

DIAGNOSIS

If you are experiencing breast related issues, your doctor will need to know the following:

  • Your signs as well as your symptoms
  • How you feel when having these symptoms

Likewise, your doctor will do a physical examination and review your medical history.

Breast exam Your doctor will check both of your breasts and lymph nodes in your armpit, feeling for any knots or different variations from the norm.

Mammogram– A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast

Breast ultrasound– make use of sound waves to create pictures of structures found inside the body

Removing a sample of breast cells for testing (biopsy)- is the main  approach to make a diagnosis of breast malignancy.

Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) the machine utilizes a magnet and radio waves to take photos of the inside of your breast

TREATMENT

A mastectomy is utilized to remove all breast tissue if you have breast cancer or are at high danger of having it. You may have a mastectomy to remove one breast (one-sided mastectomy) or the two breasts (reciprocal mastectomy).

Your doctor may prescribe a mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy in addition to radiation if:

  • You have at least two tumors in discrete zones of the breast
  • You’ve recently had radiation treatment to the breast area and the cancer has repeated in the breast.
  • You’re pregnant and radiation creates an unsuitable hazard to your unborn child
