MANNITOL

By inhibiting tubular reabsorption of water and electrolytes, Mannitol increases urinary output. In order to allow water to be drawn out of body tissues, mannitol raises the osmotic pressure of the plasma.

Mannitol is used in the following conditions:

  • For renal function testing
  • Oliguric phase of kidney failure
  • Raised intracranial pressure
  • Raised intraocular pressure
  • Cerebral oedema
  • Transurethral prostatic resection irrigation

Mannitol cay cause pulmonary metabolic edema with abnormal capillary fragility congestion or edema. Avoid using in those with intracranial bleeding, congestive heart failure, lack of urine output due to severe dehydration and severe kidney disease.

Side effects of using mannitol include the following:

  • Fluid and electrolyte imbalance
  • Acidosis (with high doses)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Thirst
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Convulsions
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Tachycardia
  • Chest pain

Other symptoms include acute renal failure, skin necrosis, thrombophlebitis, blurred vision, urticaria and hypotension or hypertension.

Precautions

Check for signs of fluid and electrolyte imbalance, hypervolemia, and urinary tract obstruction. It should not be administered with whole blood. Take precautions when used during pregnancy and lactation.

Interactions

Nephrotoxicity with ciclosporin can increase when using mannitol.

If you think you may have used mannitol more than usual recommended dose, seek medical help immediately.
