MALLET TOES

Hammertoes and mallet toes are foot deformations that happen because of a structural imbalance in the muscles, ligaments or tendons that regularly hold the toe straight. The kind of shoes you wear, foot structure, injury and certain procedures can add to these deformities.

A hammertoe is characterized by an anomalous twist in the center joint of a toe, while a mallet toe affects the joint closest to the toenail. Hammertoes and mallet toes usually occur in your second, third and fourth toes.

Diminishing the pain and other effects of hammer toes and mallet toes may involve changing your footwear and wearing shoe inserts. Just in case you have a more serious case of hammertoe or mallet toe, you may require surgery to get relief.

SYMPTOMS

Hammertoes and mallet toes are abnormal twists in the joints of at least one of your toes. Moving the affected toe might be difficult or painful.

DIAGNOSIS

Your doctor can diagnose hammertoe or mallet toe by inspecting your foot. Your doctor may request for x-rays to additionally assess the bones and joints of your feet and toes.

TREATMENT

If your toe is still flexible, your doctor may suggest that you change to smooth, more comfortable footwear and that you must wear shoe inserts (orthotics) or cushioned footwear. Embeds or cushions can offer relief to your toe and alleviate weight and pain.

Likewise, your doctor may recommend exercises like getting marbles with your feet or folding a towel with your toes to help extend and add strength to your toe muscles.

If usual medications won’t help, your doctor may prescribe surgery to free the ligament that is keeping your toe from lying flat.
