MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE

Magnesium Hydroxide is a laxative that is used to treat occasional constipation. It helps to cause movement of the intestine by  drawing water into the it. This drug is also used for the treatment of other conditions such as heartburn, upset stomach and indigestion.

This medication is used to treat constipation and conditions caused by too much stomach acid such as heartburn, upset stomach and indigestion. This medication may also be used in other conditions to be determined by your doctor.

Do not use Magnesium Hydroxide if you are allergic to it or to any of its content.

Common side effects of this drug include:

  • Diarrhea

Although unlikely, more serious side effects of this drug may include:

  • Symptoms of High Magnesium Levels (e.g., Muscle Weakness, Slow/Irregular Heartbeat, Slow/Shallow Breathing, Mental/Mood Changes)
  • Symptoms of Dehydration (e.g., Decreased Urination, Dizziness, Extreme Thirst, Very Dry Mouth)
  • Stomach/Abdominal Pain
  • Bloody Stools
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Severe Allergic Reaction

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you are to undergo any surgical procedure.
  • If you are taking herbal, prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  • If you have certain medical conditions such as:
    • Kidney Disease
    • Appendicitis
    • Magnesium-Restricted Diet
    • Sudden Change in Bowel Habits

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Raltegravir
  • Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate
  • Dasatinib
  • Delavirdine
  • Atazanavir
  • Gabapentin
  • Digoxin
  • Mycophenolate
  • Phosphate Supplements (Potassium Phosphate)
  • Tetracycline Antibiotics (Doxycycline, Minocycline)
  • Certain Azole Antifungals (Ketoconazole, Itraconazole)
  • Quinolone Antibiotics (Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.
