LOW POTASSIUM (HYPOKALEMIA)

Low potassium (hypokalemia) means the potassium level in your body are below normal. Potassium is essential in carrying electrical signals to cells in your body. It is critical to the proper functioning of nerve and muscles cells, particularly heart muscle cells.

The normal amount of Potassium in the blood should be atleast 3.6 to 5.2 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). A very low potassium level (less than 2.5 mmol/L) can be life-threatening and requires urgent medical attention.

Causes of potassium loss include:

  • Diuretics
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis
  • Excessive Alcohol Use
  • Excessive Laxative Use
  • Primary Aldosteronism
  • Some Antibiotic Use

The effects of low potassium may cause the following symptoms:

  • Muscle Weakness
  • Muscle Aches
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Heart Palpitations (Irregular Heartbeats)

DIAGNOSIS

Potassium levels in the blood may be easily measured by routine blood tests.

TREATMENT

Treatments depend on the severity, patient’s symptoms and medical condition. Serum potassium levels above 3.0 mEq/liter are not considered dangerous or of great concern. It can be treated with potassium replacement by mouth. Serum levels lower than 3.0 mEq/liter may require intravenous replacement.

Intravenous replacement of Potassium must be given slowly because it can be irritating to the vein and is usually administered at a maximal rate of 10 mEq per hour. Additionally, infusing potassium too quickly can cause heart irritation and promote potentially dangerous rhythms including ventricular tachycardia.
