LISTERIOSIS

Listeriosis is a serious infection that caused by eating foods contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) bacterium. This infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women that may result in miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection of the newborn or even stillbirth.

Listeriosis may also affect newborns, elderly, and adults with impaired immune systems. Healthy adults and children sometimes are infected with L. monocytogenes, but they rarely become seriously ill. Babies can be born with listeriosis if their mothers eat contaminated food during pregnancy.

Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness.

The symptoms of listeriosis include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle Aches
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Stiff Neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss Of Balance
  • Convulsions

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosing Listeriosis is usually based on the patient’s medical history and physical exam. For a more definitive diagnosis, blood test or spinal fluid test may be done.

TREATMENT

Symptoms will usually go away within a few weeks for an otherwise healthy and not pregnant person. However, pregnant women should take antibiotics to prevent infection of the fetus or newborn. Infected babies often received the same antibiotics that are taken by adults to treat this condition.
