LINAGLIPTIN

Linagliptin belongs to a class of drugs called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way that lowers your blood sugar level. It increases the amount of insulin your body makes. (Insulin is a substance that helps move sugar from the bloodstream into the body’s cells.) Linagliptin also lowers the amount of sugar your body makes.

Linagliptin lowers the blood sugar level of adults with type 2 diabetes. It is used along with diet and exercise.

Using this drug can cause serious side effects. These include inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis). Symptoms of pancreatitis include severe pain that doesn’t go away and can be felt from your stomach area to your back.

These are some of the more common side effects people have when taking linagliptin:

  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea

These side effects may be mild and go away within a few days or a couple of weeks. If they’re more severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Before taking linagliptin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. Discuss with your doctor the risk.
  • You are going to have a surgery

It is important that you discuss with your doctor your medical history, especially of: disease of the pancreas (pancreatitis), stones in your gallbladder (gallstones).

You may experience blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar levels. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

Limit alcohol while taking this medication because it can increase your risk of developing low blood sugar.

It may be harder to control your blood sugar when your body is stressed (such as due to fever, infection, injury, or surgery). Consult your doctor because increased stress may require a change in your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar testing.

If you think that you’ve taken too much of this medication or have symptoms of low blood sugar, treat your low blood sugar.
