LACTOBACILLUS

Lactobacillus is a friendly group of bacteria. There are many different strains of lactobacillus and they are found in our urinary, digestive and genital systems.

It is also present in dietary supplements and fermented foods such as yogurt.

It is used in treatment and prevention of diarrhea of infectious types like rotaviral diarrhea in children and traveller’s diarrhea. In addition, lactobacillus is also used for treating and preventing diarrhea in combination with antibiotics.

Uses

Lactobacillus is used in the following:

  • Diarrhea in children caused by a certain virus (rotavirus)
  • Hay fever
  • Preventing diarrhea caused by antibiotics
  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Treating vaginal infections caused by bacteria (bacterial vaginosis)
  • Preventing diarrhea due to cancer treatment (chemotherapy)
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection
  • High cholesterol
  • Colic in babies
  • Inflamed mouth sores from cancer treatment (oral mucositis)
  • Inflammation of an artificial rectum surgically created in people with inflammatory bowel disease (pouchitis)
  • Airway infections
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Preventing diarrhea due to traveling
  • Treating a bowel condition called ulcerative colitis

Warnings

Do not give this drug to people with the following conditions:

  • Allergy to lactobacillusor any ingredients contained in this drug
  • Immunocompromised patients
  • Patients with gastrointestinalwall perforation

  • Children
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Weakened immune system
  • Short bowel syndrome
  • Ulcerative colitis

Interactions

Lactobacillus may interact with the following medicines:

  • Antibiotics
  • Medications that decrease the immune system (immunosuppressants)
