L-Ornithine-L-Aspartate is a salt formed by two amino acids, L-ornithine and L-aspartate. L-ornithine is the amino acid that activates the urea cycle. Both l-ornithine and l-aspartate are substrates for the glutamate transaminase enzyme. When used, they bring about increased glutamate levels. Ammonia is utilized in the change of glutamate to glutamine by glutamine synthetase enzyme. LOLA was shown to be effective in treating hepatic encephalopathy.
