KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME

Kleine-Levin Syndrome is another term that can be used for Kleine-Levin syndrome is “Sleeping Beauty Syndrome.” It is an unusual disorder that talks about uncontrolled sleepiness that occurs repeatedly.

This syndrome can affect anyone, but in different groups, teenage guys experience the condition more than other groups. Around 70 percent of people suffering from this disorder are males.

SYMPTOMS

If someone is suffering from this syndrome, he or she might not experience the signs daily. When the symptoms show, it may take a few days, weeks, or years.

Utmost sleepiness is the usual sign. People suffering from this syndrome may feel an extreme desire to go to bed and may find it hard to get up in the morning. They might stand up and eat or go to the bathroom, and go back to bed to sleep.

The phase can provoke some symptoms, these are the following:

  • Increase in hunger
  • Ill temper
  • Childlike manners
  • Illusions
  • Uncontrolled sex drive

This syndrome is unforeseeable. Phases can return without caution, even if it may take weeks, months, or years later.

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosing Kleine-Levin Syndrome is hard. You might be identified with a psychiatric disorder because it can appear with psychiatric symptoms.

Of course, we all want a quick result. But in this case, identifying Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a process of elimination. A sequence of tests might be organized by your doctor in eliminating other potential illnesses you might or might not have.

Your doctor might organize diagnostic testing and a physical examination. This may involve a sleep study, imaging tests, and blood work. This may also include an MRI or CT scan of your head.

Your doctor is using these tests in examining and eliminating the following illnesses:

  • Diabetes
  • Tumors
  • Inflammation
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Infections
  • Other sleep disorders

Uncontrolled sleepiness is also an element of depression.  Your doctor may recommend mental health evaluation. It will help your doctor in evaluating if the signs are because of the severe depression or a different mood disorder.

 

TREATMENT

There are some available medications in controlling your symptoms and can help in lessening the span of phase and avoiding the future stage.

Even though stimulant pills can cause ill-temper, these drugs are effective in keeping you awake.

Kleine-Levin syndrome can take place in people over ten years or above, which means this syndrome can have a massive effect on how you live, in terms of interacting with your friends and family, your work or school, and your daily routine.

Talking to your doctor is an excellent way of finding out how to spot if a phase is approaching.

Things like being sleepy or being tired because of Kleine-Levin Syndrome can happen all of a sudden.

To avoid yourself from some dangerous scenarios like car accidents, etc. that might happen because of the said syndrome, studying when a phase might attack you is a good idea.

Even though symptoms of KLS can occur and disappear in a period, there is still a chance for your signs and symptoms to not come back.
