KABIVEN

Kabiven is a prescription medication utilized for a balanced diet that is administered intravenously. It comes in a three-chambered bottle and is a sterile, hypertonic emulsion. Lipid injectable emulsion, dextrose, and amino acids with electrolytes are contained in these various compartments. However, kabiven’s safety and effectiveness in children under the age of two are unknown.

Use this medication precisely as recommended by your physician. Follow the prescription of your doctor carefully. 

The medication dose your physician has given is based on your condition, other medications or food supplements you may take, and your reaction to treatment. Kabiven is used in the following conditions:

  • Adult patients who need parenteral nourishment when oral or enteral nutrition cannot be provided, is inadequate, or is not recommended
  • Negative nitrogen balance in adult patients
  • A lack of critical fatty acids

Do not use Kabiven in people with the following conditions:

  • Any active ingredients or excipients to which there is a known hypersensitivity, including egg, soybean, peanut, corn, or maize products
  • Heart and lung instability
  • Severe hyperlipidemia or severe lipid metabolism disorders
  • Blood-cell-eating syndrome
  • Metabolic inaccuracy of amino acids

Kabiven may have the following side effects:

  • Hives
  • Having swollen hands or feet
  • Having trouble breathing
  • Lightheadedness
  • Enlargement of the throat, tongue, lips, or face
  • Sweating
  • Affected areas of the skin may exhibit changes in color, size, or temperature
  • Chest discomfort
  • Confusion
  • Extreme breathlessness
  • Light skin
  • Fever

Keep in mind that your physician has recommended this drug since he or she has known that the advantage to you is more noteworthy than the risk of adverse reactions. Many individuals utilizing this medicine don’t have serious side effects.  

A serious allergy to this medication is uncommon. In any case, seek emergency medical help if you see any manifestations of a serious allergic response, including a rash, tingling or swelling particularly of the face or tongue or throat, dizziness or difficulty in breathing.

Interactions

Kabiven may interact with the following medicines:

  • Coumarin derivatives
  • Coumarin

Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

  • Vein thrombosis and damage
  • Infections
  • Fluid overload and electrolyte imbalance in renal impairment
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Disorders of the liver and bile
  • Refeeding syndrome
  • Aluminum toxicity
  • Diabetes/hyperglycemia
  • Hypertriglyceridemia
