ISPAGHULA HUSK

Ispaghula husk is a substance that absorbs water in the gastrointestinal tract to create a mucilaginous mass which increases stool mass and further leading to greater peristalsis. It is known as a laxative drug that is used to treat constipation. It is usually ingested as a drink.

Ispaghula husk is used to treat constipation.

Do not give Ispaghula husk to people with the following conditions:

  • Pre-existing fecal impaction
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Natural or drug-induced reduction of gut motility
  • Colonic atony

Ispaghula husk may have the following side effects:

  • Abdominal distention
  • Gastrointestinal impaction
  • Rhinitis
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Bronchospasm
  • Anaphylaxia

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patient with swallowing difficulty
  • Children

 

Interactions

Ispaghula husk may interact with the following medicines:

  • Cardiac glycosides
  • Coumarin derivatives
  • Lithium

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Flatulence
