ISOTONIC SOLUTION

An isotonic solution is one that has a similar osmolarity, or solute concentration, as another solution. If the two solutions are isolated by a semipermeable layer, water will flow equally into the two solutions. The impact is zero water flow between the two solutions, though water is moving both ways. In science, there are some cells that must be kept in an isotonic answer to support their growth.

Many cells, which do not have a cell wall to offer support against the impacts of water and pressure, depend on the outside environment to keep up their shape. The body maintains the pH and osmolarity of its fluids to deliver isotonic solutions to wash their cells in. This solution can convey supplements and water in amounts that are equivalent to that inside the cell.

Isotonic solution is used in the following:

  • Fluid and electrolyte replacement in conditions where water and sodium losses are in isotonic proportion
  • Vehicle for IV drug administration
  • Priming rinsing fluid for hemodialysis and lavage in surgical patients

Do not give Isotonic solution to people with the following conditions:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Severe renal insufficiency
  • Edema with sodium retention

Diminished kidney function

  • Isotonic solution may have the following side effects:
    • Fever
    • Infection at the site of injection
    • Venous thrombosis or phlebitis extending from the site of injection
    • Extravasation
    • Hypervolemia

Precautions

Take extra caution:

  • Possible absorption into the blood stream andcirculatory overload when used for continuous irrigation or allowed to dwell inside body cavities
  • Use aseptic technique
  • Do not connect flexible plastic containers of intravenous solutions in series connections
  • Do not use a vented intravenous administration set with the vent in the open position

Interactions

Isotonic solution may interact with the following medicines:

Overdose & Brands

If you think you have used isotonic solution more than the usual dose, seek medical help immediately.
